Prior to the Iraq invasion, I had presumed that the whole affair was an elaborate bluff on the part of the administration, rather than an actual strategy. Events proved my presumptions to be false, though many anticipated the chaotic consequences to follow. Today, as we see Iran as the next ‘growing and gathering danger’ on the horizon, I can’t help but wonder if Bush/Cheney are even more unhinged, or if they are, as I suspect once again, bluffing.
Iran is a much larger nation, with a proudly nationalistic people, a partially representative (if still repressive) government, and a military with advanced weapon systems at their disposal. Further, the Iranians have the ability to covertly enflame religious and ethnic tensions in neighboring Iraq directly through infiltration of trainers, weapons, and financial support. Even limited ‘surgical’ airstrikes against Iran would likely elicit that sort of retaliation, and hence turn the heat on American ground troops in Iraq. The insurgency today is disparate, unevenly funded, and led mostly by fanatical volunteers. Even so, it gives the advanced US military and American politicians at home no shortage of headaches. Imagine if entire Shiite militias were suddenly armed and trained by Iranian Revolutionary guards? Even if they did not threaten American troops directly, they could fan the flames of an already smoldering civil war into a full blown conflagration, with a lot of increasingly apathetic American soldiers caught in the middle.
Bush would be a fool to follow his VP’s advice a second time, especially for little more than bolstering support during midterm elections. Even that support is hardly guaranteed from an war-weary American public.

Mr. Margolis, you certainly put out a very provocative statement. Why not? That is the buzz word(s) for the media right now (i.e., Iran and it’s nuclear capability and how the US is provoking Iran). You seem to have missed the speech made by the Iranian President Ahmadinejad about Israel and its right to exist, about the holocaust.
I am curious to find out how you arrived at your conclusion that Iran does not pose a military threat to anyone. You must have missed the underwater testing of an Iranian weapon.

Feel free to come to the Iraqi side, if possible, but if not, try the Iranian side. I am quite sure the view would be better.

The regime in Tehran certainly knows this. That’s why they’re daring the US to attack; they know they pretty much can’t!
Plus the US credibility is in tatters when it comes to who has, or is working on, WMDs. Sure Iran might not have much international support but Bush would have even less.
In my opinion, Iran just wants a deterent against any invasion and at the same time is trying to up its status in the Muslim world with some tough talk. Frankly, that’s all this “Israel will vanish” stuff is: talk.

Eric’s article is good as far as it goes but its not very specific. I could have written it.
The US citizenry is way too ignorant and passive. I read that a major Asian car produicer will open a new plantin Ontario even though southern states offered greater subsidies. Why? Because the workers were too uneducated - explanations had to be pictoral as they could not read well enough or hadn’t developed their critical thinking enough to be able to follow written instructions. Education, friends, is the only way to ensure informed citizenry and hence workable democracies. Except for the elite, US education system keeps ‘em in the dark and feeds ‘em patriotic propaganda that makes them little but sheep to be fleeced by the power elite. The demise is well under way.

It’s no wonder people in the US are gullible, 1/3 of them drop out of high school, and 50% barely finish high school, with grades that couldn’t get them into colleges.
Now as for the repercussion of the 6 generals. Oh by the way, yes, thank you for the “strategist” tag.
Well, Bush has shown yet again that he is a dimwit like no other, but then again, we have come to expect that. Rumsfled has to stay in cabinet or else Bush’s Foreign policy is going to crumble bit by bit by losing one of its “grand” thinkers. Bush will not “fire” him. One thing that it does, from my point of view, is that it discredits the Bush administration even more.
Havin retired generals who served under Rumsfeld calling him out and wanting his head on a platter is an important move in attacking the Bush administration for its botched up campagin in Iraq. If, and only if, more generals and, this is the biggie, members from Bush cabinet either leave or protest towards Rumsfeld, you may see change.
What this does is seriously undermine Bush and especially Rumsfeld, wait for it, in the army the most. Why? The generals who spoke out are very well known and the support for Bush’s war is wavering. When the leaders of the war you are fighting, are suggesting you mishandled the war, or worse yet , are losing control of it, it sends a big message to the rest of the troops. Morale is lowering pretty quickly these days.
Bush will not fire Rumsfeld, simply because if he did, that would force him to acknowledge that all of the Abu Ghraib fiasco and the botched up invasion of Iraq was what it essentially is, a big giant mistake.

He’s been largely a screw up from day one, but letting him go would be an acknowledgement of that fact. Bush simply can’t do it. If one top thinker goes then a whole host of questions start to rise about the others. Bush knows where that leads and he doesn’t want to go there.

One final note on the Rumsfeld situation.
Although I do detest the guy, I believe the number of generals calling for firing is something like 6 or 12.
There are currently some 900 generals or admirals in the US military, plus thousands more retired.
All things in perspective, a handful of generals calling for Rumsfeld’s head isn’t really a big deal by any means - even though what they say is correct and Bush is foolishly determined not to heed their advice. At any given time in US history you could probably find dozens of generals who feel a certain way about any issue. But it does help to have such voices being heard.

Hey I went to the Toy Solider military accademy as well! Small world.
Not just any toy soldiers either - I had the painted ones from the UK with the metal base; ‘Britains’ they were called. Plus I had some from France (‘Starlux’) and of course the usual assortment of greens (USA), reds (USSR), greys (Germans), yellows (Japan), and browns (UK).
Notice how today’s toy soldiers (at least the ones I’ve seen in the toy shops) no longer resemble the forces from WWII. Seem to have more of a generic look to them. No longer PC I suppose…

My own experience with military strategy began with the toy lead soldiers from England. Lots of Grenadier Guards, etc. etc. that I arrayed on our hardwood floors. These are worth a lot of $ these days. Little did mommy know when she tossed them. Thej of course there is Chess. But the master world domination game has to be Risk. One can see how international animosities build and get carried forward for years. Dangerous for relationships.

The important factor isn’t how many generals are out for Cheney’s blood, but WHO they are…and at what stage in their career they are. Iirc, they comprise very senior very respected retired (or near retired) staff officers with strategic command experience (ie. Zinni). …People of significant gravity who are beyond the political reach of the Pentagon or the White House (or who just don’t care any more). …of course, history will not likely remember them, just as most of the great generals of WWII were forgotten while the “political” generals ARE remembered. I have a funny (not “ha ha”) feeling that it will be the same when the history of the˙”Iraq War” is written. Bush and Rumsfeld won’t go down as another George Custer.
As for Iran, I would like to think it a joke that Bush didn’t deny the possibility of using nuclear arms there…. but I just have a sinking feeling that those two would dare anything. I hope they’re just playing brinksmanship.

It’s because they have no more fears of being sacked that they are coming out with this criticism. Let me see them come out when they are on the job, or on the battlefield? How about a Chief of Staff for example?
I mean it won’t happen because the Chief of Staff is one of Bush’s guys and plus, which general still in service in their right mind would call out a president or his secretary? None. Why? well, again, they are too scared of losing their job and don’t have enough courage to do that. And for a general on the battlefield to come up with that kind of criticsm, would be not just political suicide but military also as it would undermine his whole, brigade, division or army corps…
Imagine a general saying this : “We(or I) don’t believe in this war anymore”—-imagine what the soldiers would do?
P.S. I, on the other hand still have many of my toy soldiers and artillery pieces. It’s true though that moms do that kind of stuff, i.e, throw out your stuff without you even asking for or permitting it.

Is Iraq really that much of a ‘disaster’?
Vietnam casualties 58,184
Korea casualties 142,000
World War II casualties 407,300
Iraq casualties 2,375
Although Saddam’s ex-forces and others are causing the U.S. a significant headache, there is no chance of U.S. forces losing military dominance. I think over a 20-year timeframe future historians will probably conclude that the U.S. foray into establishing a military presence in Iraq, Afganistan (and possibly eventually Iran if they keep the rhetoric up) was a stratagic success, given the costs, if only to strategically prevent China (or a re-communized Russia) from recruiting allies or securing terrirory in the region, especially considering future energy supply concerns. Once infrastructure is rebuilt, trade intensified and the government forces organized and solidified, order will eventually return.
I would concede however that Rumsfeld et. al. should have dealt with this ‘improvised explosive device’ problem long ago. All allied forces should be travelling in tanks, not spruced-up jeeps, and should have proper armour protection. The casualty count is 802 from IED’s alone.

Mind you the Vietnam War lasted almost 15 years for the US troops. Don’t also forget that the war was fought on a completely different terrain…forests and dense jungles offer much more cover than an open desert. The Iraq war has only started…it’s only been in effect 3 years compared to Vietnam.
Also don’t forget that the 3 other wars were fought against armies that had superiour numbers…and they were fought against organised armies…not organised insurgency groups. Third, those wars did not involve a complete overtake of the government and then facing resistance…it was country against country…or should I say army against army.
Furthermore, the US has better equipement in this war than in those 3 earlier, which enables them to significantly reduce their casualities, especially by calling airstrikes.
Again, those were full on wars…this was just a complete and utter bullying without major resistance.
So, FYI, you cannot compare those wars to the one in Iraq.
I have said this before, and I will say it again. The US does have the best weapons technolgy in the world. But it has probably the worst soldiers in the world. They would not be able to last long without calling airstrikes on enemy positions.
I bet you, if you put American soldiers and gave the opposing force the same amount of equipement and armor, that in gun battles face to face or urban warfare, or jungle, or whatever, they would get whipped.
Give the Iraqis the equipement the US has and with minimal training they will be able to beat the US Army. I’d put my money on it!

The war in South Vietnam was very much like Iraq in some ways…. but what we don’t know is really how sympathetic the Iraqi population of any sect is to the insurgency. Is there only one insurgency? Do we, as observers that depend on the media for all info, really know? The VC motives were fairly straightforward.
Statistically (‘cause they’re always right…) the casualty rate may be similar or worse in Iraq. Take the number of personnel that served in Vietnam (not the max at any one time) and calculate the casualty rate for them. Do the same for the Iraq war to-date. I think one could be very surprised by the result. Of course, that would exclude “private contractors” …

I strongly disagree that the US has “probably the worst soldiers in the world.” Worse than Canadians, Israelis or Brits, yeah, but the WORLD?
US troops stormed Fallujah in November 2004 and lost 60+ KIA taking a vast city, street-to-street, house-to-house where air support was much less of a factor. Compare that to 1,000+ Russians killed on New Years Eve 1995 in Grozny or the JNA debacle in Vukovar (4,000+ KIA) – both facing similar urban resistance and yet only winning after horrific losses.
As for the Iraqis being able to beat the US on an equal equipment playing field, don’t kid yourself, or bet your money!
The Iraqi army fought Iran (which had purged many generals) to an eight-year standstill where neither side was able to advance more than a few miles. The US Army chewed up and spit out the same Iraqi Army in a matter of days back in 1991.

Canuckistani, of course there are hundreds of generals in America. Problem arises that when at least a dozen of these generals (including Abizaid and an ex-Joint Chief of Staff) who are EXTREMELY well respected by both the media and polticians alike start calling for the resignation of Rumesfield, that itself is a very serious matter. Now if some general from the Illinois National Guard calls for the same thing, you think anybody is going to bother listening to him? Doubt it.
As for casualties in Iraq, they are quite high. First off, a definition of a casualty means dead or seriously wounded. There have been nearly 12000-15000 wounded and over 2000 killed. That would be about 14000-17000 casualties my friend. Also, if you look at past wars like Vietnam, for every American killed there were two wounded. Right now the ratio is more like for every one killed there are seven wounded. Why? Improvement in body armor. And although the Iraqi insurgents can’t defeat the US military (which isn’t even their goal in the first place), they have effectively bogged down the US military in Iraq.

I don’t think the comparison between this war’s casualties and other wars is apt. The losses sustained in Vietnam were astronomical once the war really heated up, but in the first three years of the conflict, I think the casualty numbers were fewer than one hundred. Five years later, that many Americans would be killed just to take a single strategic offensive.
Worse than casualties though, is the amount of money this war costs. You might argue that it will be worth it once Iraq is pumping crude again, but I am not convinced. The US military, formidable as it is, is phenomenally expensive to deploy, supply, and operate. Just think about the amount of fuel the fully mechanized armor and infantry consume. The idea of putting routine patrols in heavy tanks is just ludicrous given the expense of operating M1’s… notwithstanding the amount of damage their routine use would cause Iraq’s already shattered roadways and general infrastructure.
What’s worse, fuel consumed by ground forces are a drop in the bucket compared to gas guzzled by the aircraft operating in the skies over Iraq 24/7. No wonder the military has stepped up the use of Predator UAVs… they use a lot less gas and require far less maintenance.
That said, King, I totally disagree with your characterization about the quality of American troops in the field. Many who faced Mongol opponents in the 1300’s suspected that the Mongols were not hardy combat soldiers, since they relied so much on artillery and archery barrages to ‘soften up’ the enemy. They were very much mistaken… the Mongols, like the Americans of today, understood that the importance of safeguarding human capital. As a nomadic people with armies traveling over great distances, it was crucial for Mongol armies to limit exposure to hostile contact with the enemy. Similarly, because the US military relies heavily on force multipliers does not imply that they cannot function well without them. Journalists have described as mesmerizing the assault on Fallujah by the US Marine Corps, with foot soldiers, armor, and aircraft operating in perfect synchrony. That level of coordination in such a complex environment is a compelling testament to the ability of American soldiers to manage sophisticated combined arms tactics in very tough situations. The reliance on force multipliers and heavy weapons is a mainstay of modern armies anyway, so talking about how they would do in the absence of air or artillery support is almost meaningless… it’s like asking how well a Mongol horse archer would fight if you took away his bow and quiver.

I find it sad that the Canadian Army - which has NEVER been defeated in ANY war - is going to have to do just that in Afghanistan. Why? Because the Canadian public have no stomach for casualties anymore. We’re used to sitting around in blue helmets, barely getting shot at.
Now if we take any casualties we think we’re in another Vietnam, even if our losses are light for a mission of its size and length. 15 soldiers killed since 2002? That was an average morning in Normandy!
If I were the Taliban I’d shift every last fighter against the Canadians. They’ve found an enemy that has no backing behind them and one that will be forced to flee in disgrace at the sight of a few more deaths.
Pethetic doesn’t begin to describe it.

Oh sure, If the Taliban want to do damage, they should do what you suggested.
The problem here, as I think it was discussed in depth here before, is not the problem of how many Candians are dying in Afghanistan (ok it is but there is something else) but how this whole operation is presented by the government.
Seriously, this is not a peacekeeping mission, and that’s why this is so hard to take in the public eye. Why is it that soldiers are dying if this is a peace-keeping mission?(ok those 4 deaths were by an IED, but still) That implies that there is already peace in the region and that they are only insuring it.
I think, that if this operation or mission was presented the way it should be, i.e., some kind of a war operation, than the casulaties would be swallowed a little bit better, even if no major change would be set in the public opinion.

It’s not like we haven’t suffered deaths during peacekeeping missions. I think 23 of our guys died in the Balkans (although I’m not sure how many were from hostile fire). Total peacekeeping deaths since the 1960s are 150+.
I agree this is the first time in a while that we’ve been actual targets for the enemy, as opposed to blue-helmuts being killed in the crossfire in some warzone, but frankly, I welcome a departure from the tradition UN peacekeeper role.
First of all, we’re not that big into it these day. Our image as a greatpeacekeeper is long gone. According to the UN’s website we’re currently ranked #35 or so in top troop-contributing nations, right up there with Guatemala and Togo.
Secondly, when was our last successful peacekeeping mission anyway? In Bosnia UN troops stood around and watched people die and cities get shelled, Somalia was a fiasco, Rwanda was a complete catastrophe, and UN troops haven’t really limited things a great deal in Congo or Darfur. Canada’s proudest peacekeeping momment in recent times was in the Medak Pocket when we held our ground against Croat troops; in other words, when we stopped acting peaceful.

We all know this mission doesn’t sit right because it involves Amerikkka, therefor we shouldn’t be there.
We’d rather send our troops to watch 100,000 Bosnians die as part of a useless UN peacekeeping mission than work to help Afghanistan recover from a 25-year nightmare if it means being part of Team Bush.
As for the Afghans and their opinions on the matter, f*ck em!
Sure Canadians claim to care deeply for the Afghan people, but that concern ends when Bush benefits.
I fear that’s really what this all comes down to for many in this country.
