Alexander the Great had moderate success after a long campaign but only through political means, he was never able to pacify the population.
Just what makes the NATO forces including the poor Canadians feel that they will succeed in Afghanistan.
Ask the Brits what happened to their garrison of 16000 in Kabul in the 1800s when only a physician by the name of William Brydon was allowed to walk out to tell the tale.
The Soviets met the same fate in the late 70s and 80s.
History is replete with the stories of Afghanistan as being the graveyard of many empires.
EM is dead on with his analysis of the current misadventure ongoing in Afghanistan. Even the umrikkans having read the tealeaves and cleverly handed of the brunt work to NATO and just provide air cover.

Well, when our efforts to ‘pacify the population’ amounted to no more than 20,000 soldiers and paying off local warlords, what better could have been expected?
The Taliban were well aware of the dangers that heroin posed to their ability to dominate the country, but it seems that our own leaders, hoping to fight the Afghan war cheaply, forgot that opium profits are a great way to fund resistance fighters. We certainly could have taken a page from the Taliban playbook and tried to control the narco traffic, but that’s hardly possible when you have less than a division’s worth of soldiers and a handful of Special Forces in a mountainous and largely rural country.
‘Omnipotent airpower…’ once again, great for conquest, but as Genghis Khan was once advised, ‘one cannot rule from the back of a horse..’ or the cockpit of an F-15.

Believe it or not but I read a book written by an ISI brigadier and I don’t remember the name but he said the CIA was involved in the narcotics trafficking during Afghan war.

As a Canadian, and ex-military member, I am a little shocked and hurt by the reaction I am seeing from our friends in the USA. How many “God Bless USA” emails have I read that state that Canada is no friend of the States because we do not blindly rubber stamp the war in Iraq. Or TV commentator’s espousing the need to build a fence along the Canadian border because we can not be trusted simply because we ask ‘WHY’?
I am watching almost every week as more Canadians soldiers are brought home from Afghanistan to repatriation ceremonies. Does this not mean anything to our American friends? Is Canadian blood spilled less important because it is not spilled in Iraq?
I can not speak to the question of if we are really making a difference in Afghanistan or not, because I am not there to see it for myself. I can not, and will not accept the news blindly, either from FOX or Aljazeera, because they to are pushing their own agendas. I hope that when the history books are written, it will be decided that we did make a difference, even if it was to help guide the Afghan people to control their own future.
I await your comments.

Let’s not mistake war with conquest. If we think of war as simply dismantling an enemy’s ability to resist you militarily, there isn’t a country on this planet that could withstand the unrestrained might of the American armed forces. Generals the world over acknowledge the mesmerizing ability of American war machine to destroy. In that sense, the trillions of dollars invested into developing a high tech military have paid huge dividends.. we can strike at almost any target with only a slight risk of retaliation. But, as just about any imperial power knows, defeating the enemy at war is a very small, almost insiginificant part of projecting power and influence.
When it comes to managing the politics of the conquered, Americans have shown manifest incompetence, and in so doing have damaged the ability of our military to intimidate. Many see the quagmires in Iraq and Afghanistan as a failure of American military might, but I would argue that they actually represent a failure of leadership and managing local politics. The American war machine is still at least a generation ahead of its closest rivals, and spending on maintenance, research, and development is more than most other nations combined.
That said, the investment has gotten us a military capable of fearsome destructive power; unfortunately, it’s not able to project influence and ideology as well as it’s able to blow things up.

And I got a phrase for you… “asymmetric warfare”. One can be a generation ahead and still get hurt. Look up things like the Sunburn missile and how American aircraft carriers are sitting ducks (they admit it).
True the American military can blow anything up. Theoretically, they can blow up every inch of Pakistan if given enough motivation.
But then, guess what we can do? A nuke is a nuke is a nuke.
Pakistan’s nukes can’t reach as far as Amreeka? That, my dear fellow, is a political constraint, not a technical one. Add another stage to a 2-stage rocket and you cross the 3000-4000 mile barrier to orbital thrust and get an effective ICBM. But the moment we test an engine of that strength is the day we lose whatever friends we got in Amreeka. They will feel threatened.
India doesn’t have an ICBM…. but actually, they could have one the very next day. Their polar launch vehicle… it can place a sat into orbit yes? Sat or warhead.. same thing. In fact, with a warhead, it is easier. Why hasn’t India gone ahead with an ICBM? Same reason.
Now point is, Amreeka can’t take anything for granted. Retaliation can come even when not expected. If that were not tha case, they would’ve bombed N.Korea by now. God knows, they want to.
Also remember, it is Amreeka’s headache… projecting power. Us? We don’t have delusions of grandeur… no power-projection fantasies.

we have cruise missiles (400-500 km) range and loads of other stuff too… where would the US launch its attack from? afghanistan? it cant… logistical nightmare… the amount of armament needed to make a difference cannot be routed through russia…
india would never allow itself to be pulled into a situation where it’s cities could be a target for unconventional war…
remember that our airforces never targeted civilians in the three wars nor did they for that matter… the only strike option is through aircraft carriers… and the aircraft carriers are vulnerable to a lot of stuff; including cruise missiles…
even this is basically armchair thinking… believe me when i tell you that it is simply not do able…

I agree, the extremist are the problem. As long as all groups are fearful of each otherm then those that feed on the misconceptions and xenophobia will win. I was hopefull after 9/11, when there seemed to be a swelling of people that activly searched out information on other religious groups, in order to understand thier neighbours better. What happened to that?
It is harder to hate a man after you have shared bread with him. The more we learn about others, the less contol the fear mongers have over us.

One of my favourite things that BBC News did was to present a dialogue between a respectable Israeli and a respectable Lebanese man during the course of the war.
The link is, of course, gone, but it was interesting.
They had another feature where writers could ask questions to a group of Lebanese people who were surviving in the midst of the Israeli assault:

Alternately, we could plan a huge trip to get everyone who posts on this site to all meet up in Graceland, TN, and have a big hugathon. Heh.
Another point to remember is that the ones who are behaving emotionally are nothing more than slaves to their emotions, and their limited information. Their emotions vis-a-vis their limited information condition them to not seek out extra information, thus limiting their viewpoint.
There’s nothing wrong with the agents provocateurs here - respect free will afterall… But remember, they’re only capable of trying to trigger an emotion within you that they are being controlled by.
It’s like if you were to call someone fat - it reveals more that you have insecurities about body image and place priorities on external appearance, more than it reveals someone as being overweight.
If someone here calls you a nazi, or blind, or fascist, or an islamophobe, or an anti-semite, it simply reveals their attachment to a particular political thought.
If you are to take it seriously, and be dragged along by your emotions, against your will, then you are being manipulated. That’s it, that’s all. Manipulated. Now ask yourself, “Will I believe this because I’m forced to believe this, or because I choose to believe this? Who is saying this? What is the source? Is there an agenda, and if so, what is it?”
I really doubt, for example, that Bino really expects to change anyone’s world views here - or if he does, he fails to understand that from his, unbudging point of view, he is demanding/manipulating more than asking/sharing information.
Do you take dating advice from a single person? From a bitter divorcée? From a happily married person? Can the “TRUTH” be bullied into you? Shouldn’t it speak for itself? (Truthfully, no, it often doesn’t) -
I suppose the best solution that I have is balance - we should all consider the polar opposite viewpoint to our own when expounding on a concept or reacting to a piece of news. Hold a balanced opinion, and then you are protected from extremism.

It’s interesting to watch this group progress through its daily routine. I’ve often thought of adding some earthy comment on the issue at hand (Eric’s latest article maybe?) but have come to realize that most participants are far too engrossed in their own agendas to want to deal with anything so humble.
Though I do find it fascinating to read thru the posts and note the post times vis-a-vis the worldly locations some would have us believe they come from - either they have very odd sleep cycles or they just can’t tear themselves away from the forum to get some much needed rest before posting their next epistle (epithet?). Or maybe they’ve managed to automate the entire process, in which case, would they mind letting the rest of us in on the secret.

The US Military startegy is based on the assumption that Muslims want to creat an empire by combining these 57 Islamic countries. Is that believable I doubt it given the situation of these countires. It may be that its all cover up to secure the world depleting natural resources. Its an open question?
Now, As far Muslim and Christans are concerned.
Muslims in these 57 countries, No matter how poor they are and uneducated they are you will never see them insulting Jesus(P.B.U.H) and let me tell you one more fact. In the Tomb of prphet Muhammad(P.B.U.H) there is one space for one grave. The space left for Jesus (P.B.U.H) where he will be buried after ruling for 40 years on this planet. Thats according to Islamic faith and you can see how much we Muslims Love Jesus(P.B.U.H). Its distrubing when we love jesus(P.B.U.H) so much why would anybody point fingers at us.
The fault is not in Chirstianity or Islam the fault lies in own charachters. Think about it.

I hear what is behind your suggestion for a moderator, namely to keep the blog deteriorating into fractitious name calling and to maintain discussion at the intellectual level. You said it well above about peoples’ mouths (brains) being run by their emotions and trying to hook others emotions. I would drill deeper and suggest they explore the source of their emotions, which is a result of religious brainwashing.

Ghawley - Interesting article. Machiavelli would be proud! It’s that old boogey-man reoutine that’s used to polarize a population, as you said. My friend asked me an interesting question today - if the US had caught Bin Laden during the initial invasion into Afghanistan, would the USA continue to have supported the War on Terror, or does the continuation of this conflict rely on them NOT capturing him?
