ENOUGH WITH THE MIDEAST KABUKI!
September 05, 2010
On 2 Sept, 2001, in a newspaper article, I wrote: “America’s strategic and economic interests in the Mideast and Muslim world are being threatened by the agony in Palestine, which inevitably invites terrorist attacks against US citizens and property.” The 9/11 attacks came nine days later

President Barack Obama is absolutely right to seek an end to the endless suffering of Palestinians.   It is an affront to humanity and gravely undermines America’s values,  security and prestige.

In my most recent book, “American Raj – America and the Muslim World,” I tried to show how the poisonous conflict over Palestine has generated much of what we call “terrorism,” and how it is dragging the United States ever into a deeper but unnecessary conflict with the Muslim world.

For those yearning to see an end to the seven decade Jewish-Palestinian conflict, to see security and tranquility for Israel, and justice for Palestinians,  last week’s so-called “peace talks” in Washington were a painful farce.

President Obama convoked Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to meet in Washington with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas, Egypt’s strongman, Husni Mubarak, and Jordan’s King Abdullah.

The result was the same kind of tired, stale Mideast political kabuki that has dragged on for the past decade: platitudes about peace, cheery handshakes, and talks about talks about talks.

All involved knew that this was political theater designed to beguile American voters into believing progress was being made in the eternal Mideast mess.

These faux peace talks were also supposed to send a message to the angry Arab world that the United States was indeed pushing for a fair peace in Palestine, and to show Israelis that their leader, PM Netanyahu, not long ago in Obama’s doghouse for humiliating visiting VP Joe Biden, was back in Washington’s good books in time for November elections.

Hardly anyone in the Arab or Muslim world took this charade seriously.   The only people who don’t seem to really understand what’s going on are poorly informed North Americans.

America’s media dutifully reported the Washington talks with the same unquestioning solemnity and deference that the old Soviet media used to report Communist Party congresses.

In this game, Israel holds all the cards. The ruling right-wing Likud coalition insists it will never tolerate creation of a Palestinian state, the key to resolving this conflict. Never. At best, Likud says it may accept a self-governing Arab entity – in short, a old South African apartheid “Bantustan.”

Making things even grimmer, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the loose-lipped head of Netanyahu’s major coalition partner, the ultra-orthodox Shas Party, proclaimed god should strike dead the hapless Mahmoud Abbas.    Palestinian gunmen killed four Israeli settlers on the West Bank.

As the brilliant Israeli writer Uri Avnery points out, Likud even refuses to define Israel’s final borders. According to Avnery, there remains an expansionist impulse within Likud and its hard right coalition parties that foresees  an even larger Jewish state.

Whatever the case, Netanyahu’s ruling Likud holds all the cards in this game. Israel’s strategy is simple: keep talking about peace talks, and make occasional cosmetic concessions to placate Washington, while speeding ahead with colonizing the West Bank and the nearly forgotten Golan Heights.

As a Palestinian diplomat aptly noted, “we are negotiating with Israel over dividing a pizza while Israel is busy eating it up.”

There are now 500,000 Jewish and non-Jewish Russian settlers on the West Bank in 121 settlements connected by special security roads off limits to Arabs. Much of the West Bank’s best farmland and underground water has been expropriated by Israel.   Jewish Jerusalem keeps expanding into the West Bank through huge, fortified apartment buildings while Arabs in East Jerusalem are being steadily squeezed out, often with the help of tax deductible donations by American Zionist groups.

Israeli check points and security controls are in part designed to make life so miserable for Palestinians that they will emigrate.  Israel’s expanding security walls are carving away yet more land.

Today, creation of a viable, contiguous Palestinian state looks hardly possible – and impossible tomorrow. Instead, the West Bank is becoming a patchwork of violent bantustans that are wholly dependent on Israel and surrounded by its security forces. Most Israelis are pleased because they no longer suffer as many bombings and attacks as they once did.   But Palestinians and the Muslim world are outraged.

Watching “negotiations’ between four American client states – Israel, Egypt, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority – who receive billions in US payments is beyond even acid Mideast cynicism. Egypt and Jordan, both close allies of Israel, have cooperated in the repression of the Palestinian movement Hamas.  Neither wants to see a Palestinian state.

Hamas, penned up in the giant open-air prison camp of Gaza, was not invited to Washington. Hamas rejects peace talks and
refuses to recognize Israel until Israel recognizes the claims of five million uprooted, stateless Palestinians.

But Hamas is also the legitimate voice of Palestinians, having been elected in a proper democratic election in 2006, the Arab world’s only honest vote since Algeria’s 1991 election that was subsequently quashed by the military, with French and US backing.

However extreme, Hamas is largely free of the endemic corruption infecting Mahmoud Abbas’ Palestinian Authority, which most Arabs regard as a bunch of Israeli and American stooges and yes-men. The Palestinian Authority certainly does not speak for most Palestinians.

Half of Israelis still want to make a land for peace deal with the Palestinians. Unfortunately, Israel’s peace camp has fallen silent and receives no backing from the United States.
The American dialogue on the Holy Land is almost entirely controlled by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which is virtually an arm of the Likud Party.   Candidate Obama in fact promised AIPAC never to pressure Israel into a peace deal it did not want, a pledge he is keeping.

But no pressure on Israel by Washington to trade land for peace means no real peace, no matter what sweetheart deal Abbas signs.   No real peace means more woes for the United States in dealing with the Muslim world. And it likely means more 9/11’s.

Glenn...there is more to 9/11 than what we are "told".Several questions remain unanswered.Being a licensed pilot myself I know that all aircraft are tracked by radar over American skies. When air traffic controllers saw a deviation from the respective flight plans, why weren't any jets scrambled to intercept what clearly was an abnormal scenario. In the time frame from takeoff to their destination, there was more than ample time to do this and prevent what had happened.Could Washington have known that 9/11 was going to happen and did nothing to stop it? I'm still,to this very day, trying to figure out how an amateur pilot could fly, with such precision a Boeing 757 into the Pentagon.Only a a pilot with 15000+ hours of flight time could have 'possibly' completed such a feat....or maybe a fighter pilot....or more likely a cruise missle? Lots to think about....

I cannot thank enough Eric Margolis for his observation regarding the peace talks. As Eric rightfully stresses these talks are for talk’s sake, and there is no intention for the US of A to make a just peace in the Middle East.

There is no justification for attacks against The United States like 9/11, and there is no justification for the complacency towards the Palestinian right to have their land protected and their identity respected as the Human Rights Charter dictates. The United Nation nowadays can only puke more resolutions and yet there is no way to implement the resolution that forces Israel to give back the land it occupied since 1967. It is funny how the world phrases the "Israel captured land" as if this land is not taken by force in a series of bloody wars and killing of civilians.
Not to mention that any form of Palestinian résistance is now considered as an act of terrorism.

I am frustrated, and I am an Arab, and I hate Arab leaders who continue to kiss up the US's in order to stay in power. There is no Justice in the twenty first century and when it comes to the struggle between Arabs (Palestinians, Syria and my beloved Lebanon) and Israel, the US is obliged to support the Jewish ally for obvious historic reasons.

I am ready for the unexpected because in this world of lawlessness, it is the survival of the mightiest. I believe that now it is time to act in the name of peace before it is too late.
The war against Israel's occupation is not only justifiable it is in evitable. Let Europe, the US and the world watch out because winners can be losers and in the end no one will survive to claim the award of being on top of the world. Thanks Eric Margolis, you just made my day gloomier. Just Kidding! Perhaps i must just join the Lebanese Resistance for the fun of it.

Another fine article by Eric on the never ending insanity that exists today...a must read for ALL North Americans.I have voiced my opinion numerous times that as long as Netanyahu is in power then there NEVER will be a lasting peace in the Mideast.Netanyahu has made this statement publicly that he is dead against a Palestinian homeland. The ONLY way any sort of agreement can be reached is if ALL the lands seized during the 6 day war in 1967 be rightfully returned to the Palestinian people. The vast majority of misinformed people believe that this war was started by the Arab world.I advise everyone to search the story of the USS Liberty and thoroughly read and understand what happened. When you have a situation where your ally "knowingly" commences shooting against you....even though the American flag CLEARLY was shown on the USS Liberty, then that tells me the USS Liberty has received intelligence which would implicate Israel. Now to make matters worse,Washington knew that the Liberty was under fire by their "ally" Israel, but did nothing to stop this for fear of embarassing Israel. As a matter of fact Washington ordered any American warships in the area to leave at once....This certainly tells me that one does not to be a genius to see for themselves.Yes Washington abandoned their own servicemen,to avoid any embarssment to Israel.
As for President Obama to bring about peace in the Mideast....don't hold your breath. His hands are tied.As Netanyahu once said..."I have the United States in my pocket"....they will do what they are told by me.Meanwhile,Eric is quite correct about any looming "terrorist" attacks against America....unless a true homeland(not a giant prison camp) is given to the Palestinians ,along with their rightful land (stolen from them)....which I highly doubt.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, Eric! This is the report I have been waiting for you to write, calling a spade a spade and telling it like it is.

I think the majority of the world's population not living in the Middle East think it is not their problem the Jews and Palestinians have a mutual intense hatred for each other. It doesn't affect me, they convince themselves. This notion cannot be further from the Truth.

On reflection, it is the epitome of Chutzpa the Zionists were able to go to the world and say, 'The Bible says this is our land. It is our deed to the land, and even though 3000 years have passed since there was an Israel, that nullifies all current landholder rights to the land of Palestine,' and the world accepted it. Israel was re-introduced in the world. The rest, as you point out in this article, is recent history.

As a believer in Almighty God, the God of Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad, I can see the re-creation of the temporal Israel is a necessary precursor to the realization of the Spiritual Israel in which ALL Nations of the Earth will be blessed, and the curse will be lifted.

Eric, I have seen what you describe above for a long time. When the conditions in Gaza were on the back burner of world media and public attention, I uploaded this report to CNN on February 3rd of this year.

http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-402662

Personally, I am glad to see the Gaza situation, and the Middle East in general is now at the forefront of the world's attention. We all have a part to play and a responsibility in resolving the issue of ancient hatreds that breed fear, paranoia, suspicions and divisions in any society.

What will be the Final Status of Jerusalem where Judaism, Christianity and Islam meet, and where Jesus was crucified for his Love of ALL Humanity?

Multitudes! Multitudes! In the Valley of Decision. The Day of the Lord is near in the Valley of Decision.

It is the Will of God the Nations should beat their swords into plough shares and their spears into pruning hooks and the Nations should not learn war anymore. In other words, switch our common human priorities from war and war production to food production. The Christian Nations and especially most Christian America continue to praise the Lord and pass the ammunition. So much for having the Faith to act in the Lord's prayer, Thy Will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from mine, Christ says. He is not addressing those who don't believe in his saving Grace by those words.

If humans are too dumb to recognize the imperative need to do this at this juncture of world history, then God will give them what they want. All those weapons of mass production/destruction they paid for will be used on us all.

I am surprised that Mr. Margolis still parrots the Bush conspiracy theory about 911. I would have expected him to do his own research on the most important issue of our times. If he did so, he would find very strong evidence that all 3 WTC buildings were demolished by explosives. The "evidence" against OBL was never presented as promised.

Almost 1300 professional architects and engineers are calling for a new investigation http://www.ae911truth.org/

The demonization of muslims following 911 has strengthened the Israeli control over US politicians and pretty much eliminated any hope for the Palestinians.

Unfortunately, the current government in CanaDa has decided resistance is futile and is now totally assimilated in the US orbit.

I don't see what you see by your opening line, "I am surprised that Mr. Margolis still parrots the Bush conspiracy theory about 911." I don't see that at all reading this article in it's entirety. You were put off only by the opening paragraph which coloured your interpretation of everything that followed.

The Israeli Palestinian may be death of us all. It is not likely the Toronto Sun would have printed this column since people here do not want to offend the Jewish population. It is a shame since the Jewish people I know are very good people. I don't understand how they can be so aggressive to a small indigenous population. Maybe it's something like our treatment of First Nations.

The first thing someone in your position should do is learn the difference between Jewish and Zionist. I, too, know Jewish people with hearts of gold, as well as Muslims with the same heart of gold. This is not about Jews and Muslims - this is about MONEY and DOMINATION. This is about a Zionist agenda of stealing the ancestral lands of another people to further the Zionist agenda. Jew does not equal Zionist, there are Zionists who are Atheist. Research the differences and you will gain a better understanding of the current cuircumstances taking place in the Mid-East.

I have read your comments in the following threads and you are a determined Anti Zionist. It was the Zionists that murdered British soldiers in Palestine before the UN vote that created Israel. They were vicious in their attacks and ended up forming the new government. It appears they still form the government of Israel but how many Zionists are NOT Jews? Maybe there are many, I don't know however if the non Zionist Jews in Israel and elsewhere wanted to stop the Zionist movement I imagine they could.
Many commentators in this thread agree the situation will not be settled under the current regimes in Washington, Jerusalem or the capital of Palestine (I assume there is one) and that none or the Arab/Muslim neighbours or other world powers have any interest in intervening so I guess the answer is the make babies as one writer suggested.
Oh, you mentioned stealing ancestral lands of another people. Isn't that what our forefathers did in Canada, USA, Australia, Mexico and so many other places around the world?.

For years, the Jews were the persecuted ones - Egypt; Russia; and Germany.

Then, after WW II, the US and the UK got together and thought that making a country for the Jews would be a great idea. One little problem - where they put the country of Israel was the country of Palestine.

The Palestines were not amused by this. They were forced out of their own country, so you can see why the resentment remains.

Now Israel is building walls around the Palestinians. Sort of reminds me of Berlin, where the USSR created the Berlin Wall.

To roughly quote the late President, Ronald Regan, "Mr Netanyahu bring this wall down".

Now you would have a chance at the peace process.

For anyone wishing to know what's REALLY going on in Israel, I would suggest they begin researching the Zionist agenda as laid out by David Ben-Gurion. There has never been any intention to appropriate land to the Palestinians, it has been a war of extermination from the beginning. The British mandate gave away land that didn't belong to them to the Zionists, and the Zionists' agenda calls for the complete destruction of the Arab population so they can "own" it all.
They have instigated the situation you see there today for the purpose of crying "terrorism" and demonizing the Palestinian people so they can justify their war of extermination (or genocide). Anybody that questions the Zionists' position on this matter is immediately labeled as an Anti-Semite and his/her arguments are henceforth nullified. This is a cowardly, sleazy tactic, to say the least. (By the way, for those who don't yet know it, the Arabs are also a Semitic people, so the idea that defending Palestinians is Anti-Semitic is ignorant. Semitic refers to a family of languages including Arab, Hebrew, and seven or eight others. This is one more aspect of this situation the Zionists hope you will never realize).
Furthermore, the Zionists have infiltrated the American government and now manipulate all decisions that may have an influence on the mid-east situation, especially any talk of peace.

Israel has a serious problem; The Jewish population are gradually being outnumbered by the Muslim population. The birth rate of the Jewish population there is far less than the Arab birth rate, and the Zionists fear being the minority in Israel. They are trying desperately to "recruit" new citizens and make it attractive for the current population to remain, referring to it as "The only place a Jew can live like a Jew". (Go to a website called "Jews Against Zionism". You will see that REAL Jews want to live amongst the Arab Muslims, not remove them from Israel).
However, the current political situation has made it anything but attractive to emigration, and the unemployment rate is doing a lot to force people to leave Israel. That is why you see a desperate attempt to remove the Arab population from Israel as quickly as possible. David Ben-Gurion had actually been quoted as saying, "We will not rest until every Arab is eliminated from our midst". That doesn't sound to me like someone who wants to negotiate PEACE with the Arab population. The only way you will ever see peace in Israel is if the Zionist agenda is "outed" and the Jewish population and the Arab population are allowed to live as equals.

Thank you Eric, once again, for clearing away the propaganda and saying it like it really is.

A Turkish View:

"I feel for the jews in Israel. Really I do. I am, not Palestinian, so I can do that. I suppose I would kill them if it came to battle, if you try to shove your borders into turkey, But I also sympathize with them. They're like sheep sent before armies. Shields. You American are to blame. You encourage Jews to sacrifice their families while your corporations pump oil. Jews are your watchdogs. You give them nuclear warheads so they can keep us Muslims in our place. You fund their army. The Palestenians have no army, just a few patriots. They have no government no land to live on.

"For you, Israel is all about domination, about controlling oil. For Jews, it is a dream-one that will prove illusory. For Palestenians, it is their home-a home they've been forced to vacate. For Arabs it is an enemy fortress built on Arabs lands. For Muslims everywhere, it is an insult, a humiliation, a reason for us to hate you."

I completely understand that you would feel anger toward Jewish people, and Americans. But I encourage you to see the situation for what it really is. This is not an American vs Muslim situation, or even a Jewish vs Muslim situation. This is about the governments of Israel and America ganging up on the civilian population of what was once Palestine.

Please, try to examine the situation from the point of view of the innocent civilian populations of each side. Don't paint all with the same brush. Just because the Israeli government wants to see the Arab Muslims exterminated does not mean that is how the Israelis in general also feel, or the American civilians either. There are good people on both side of this issue and they are being ignored for the monetry gain of a few at the top on both sides. This "US Against Them" attitude is exactly what the parasites at the top want you to adopt, this makes their job of "divide and conquer" a lot easier for them. Don't hate ALL Americans, or ALL Israelis for the actions of their governments.

I suggest they do something about their government

Bumper stickers and meaningless Rallies don't cut it. They are just promoting the Status Quo, and that is unacceptable. To get to those parasites at the top you point at, one must wade through the rest first, unless that change comes from within.

I agree whole-heartedly, but what can one do when both the Democrats and the Republicans are taking their orders from the same entity? There is no real representative government in the USA, or Canada either. We should note that it matters not which party is "elected" into office, the same BS still goes on. There is no difference between any of the parties concerned. Nothing short of storming the government buildings and forcibly removing all currrent politicians is going to bring anything resembling CHANGE.

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that the politicians all love to shake hands and kiss babies while on the campaign trail, and the minute they are "elected" they slam their office door shut and refuse to answer any questions they receive from the constituents. The politicians of our countries (USA and Canada) need to be reminded in no uncertain terms that they work for us, not the other way around. Nothing short of another revolution is going to change anything.

Where's the logic in this, and why are they still assisting the government in dominating the whole world by paying for the bombs necessary to do so?

Thank you Mr.Margolis for reporting what people need to know. For close to 30 years you have been one of the few voices in the wilderness when it comes to Palestine.

The only thing I'd take exception to is the suggestion that North Americans are ignorant - meaning Europeans are less ignorant. I do not see how that can be. Europeans are victims of the same mainstream media. Even the BBC is pathetic. Last week I was reading a piece by Jeremy Bowen, one of their top Middle East correspondence. It left me shaking my head:

First he describes how right wing Israelis and Hamas militants are opposed to the peace process. So Palestinians are militant but Israelis are just right wing? An objective journalist would write: militant Israelis and militant Palestinians. He would also not single out Hamas, without singling out some of the Jewish wacko settler movements - the Talibanization of Israel, as Juan Cole puts it.

Next Mr.Bowen resorts to the outright lie. Abbas is the legitmate leader in the West bank while Hamas seized power in Gaza. Sorry it's actually the other way around. Hamas was democratically elected throughout the Palestinian territories and it was Abbas' Fatah movement which seized power in the West Bank. Fatah also tried to seize power in Gaza but was stopped by Hamas. This is the Hamas seizure of power lie the mainstream media continually harps on.

With this kind of orwellian newspeak coming from the BBC, do you really think Europeans are any better off than we are?

Forgive me but we keep going round and round on this Mideast conundrum. The Obama/Abbas/Netanyahu et al Kabuki dance is so much hot air but what else did anyone expect?? The Palestinians have only one card left to play, their birthrate! If the state of Israel fears anything more than an independent Palestinian state, it is the thought of a majority of its citizens being Palestinians in the next twenty years. MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!!!
For whatever reason, the Palestinians cannot seem to organise a trip to the toilet let alone a unified push for a state of their own. They are however, efficient breeders. GET ON WITH IT!!!!! This will force Israel either to bow to the will of an Arab majority or create real bantustans. At that point, Israel will have lost all credibility as the only democratic state in the Middle East and not even the constant evocation of the Holocaust will save its reputation. Palestinians, stop whining and get breeding!!!

But they also need to point out that

1) The UN gave away someone elses land when they created Israel, a crime was committed and the history of that crime needs to be acknoledged

2) The Americans are hypocrites and have no place mediating a school yard fight much less anything on the world stage

3) The rest of the world really needs to stop going along with the Americans,

One state solution, I can get behind that

"I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents."

and it continues today with Obama...

It's difficult to present a united front when one group is made up of a bunch of gangsters who enriched themselves when in power and are still recognized by the western world as the official government even though Palestinians voted them out years ago. The entire peace process is designed to divide the Palestinians. This is why the West empower those Quislings in Fatah.
