OBAMA SIREN SONG TO THE SCEPTICAL MUSLIM WORLD
Athens, Greece June 15, 2009
President Barack Obama came into office with an enormous reservoir of goodwill in the Muslim world. This was an asset no amount of American money or making nice could buy. But in recent weeks, he seems to have squandered a large part of this bounty.

After eight years of relentless hostility by the Bush/Cheney administration, the Muslim world greeted the advent of President Barack Obama with enormous hope and enthusiasm.

President Obama’s masterfully written, artfully delivered recent speech in Cairo was filled with precisely what the Muslim world   had been waiting to hear: an intelligent, respectful American leader calling for normalized relations with the Muslim world, including former `betes noires’ Iran and Syria, cooperation, and  genuine US support for democracy and human rights.

But the Muslim world was not as charmed  by Obama’s silver-tongued oratory as many Americans have been.  The general response was, `actions speak louder than words.  Where are the actions?’

Unfortunately, rather than a newly friendly, helpful United States promoting democracy and human rights,  many Muslims saw the Obama administration expanding the war in Afghanistan that he could easily have ended, or at least put on hold upon taking office.

They saw the US-rented Pakistani Army create 3 million refugees in its Swat offensive against rebellious Pashtun tribesmen. The continuing US occupation of Iraq that many believe will never end.  CIA’s covert campaign  to destabilize Iran and Syria, and Washington’s continuing machinations in Somalia.

They listened to the US Congress applaud like trained circus seals Israel’s refusal to cease building illegal settlements or to respect the basic human rights of Palestinians.  They heard US neoconservatives baying for war against Iran.

The Muslim world listened to Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu demand Palestinians recognize Israel  as a Jewish state, thus delegitimizing that nation’s 20% Christian and Muslim minority, and negating any right to return by millions of Palestinian refugees. Netanyahu insisted Palestine would remain sealed from the outside by Israeli security forces.
Jerusalem would remain entirely in Israel’s hands.  Israeli would continue expanding its existing settlements.

These facts unfortunately speak a lot louder than the president’s mellifluous oratory.

We would like to give the new president the benefit of the doubt. He has been in office only five months and will need a lot more time to begin repairing the catastrophic damage inflicted by the Bush administration on US interests and standing in the Muslim world and Europe. He must confront powerful Washington lobbies that have been entrenched for decades.

However, the White House’s recent actions seem disconnected from the new president’s promises.

Exhibit A: Obama unfortunately chose Egypt, of all places, from which to deliver his message to the Muslim world of amity,  democracy and human rights.

Egypt’s US-backed military dictator, President Husni Mubarak,  has held power for 27 years and is grooming his son, North Korean-style,  to replace him. A third of the Arab world’s people live in Egypt.  Rather than setting a progressive, democratic example for the Mideast, Egypt has is deeply repressive and out of step with the times.

Egypt’s human rights record is lamentable, as even senior US officials have complained.  Its prisons are notorious for abuse and torture.  The Bush administration routinely sent captives to Egypt for outsourced torture.

A far-too large army, corrupt oligarchy and ferocious secret police provide the foundation of the Mubarak regime’s power.  The CIA simply replaced one `pharaoh,’ the late, unlamented Anwar Sadat, with another, Husni Mubarak.  However, capable and clever he may be, Mubarak remains an autocrat who crushes all opposition and only tolerates yes-men.

Yet Egypt is America’s most important Muslim ally, along with Saudi Arabia.  Is this what Obama means when he calls for democracy and human rights?  He should have given his speech  from democratic Indonesia, or the progressive United Arab Emirates and Qatar rather than Egypt, a pillar of  America’s Mideast Raj.  Or, he could have ordered Egypt to transform itself into a democracy, the way Muslim Indonesia did.

Who, one wonders, is advising the president on the Mideast and Afghanistan?

Exhibit B: Lebanon’s 7 June  parliamentary elections.  A US/French/Saudi-backed coalition of  Sunni, Christians, and Druze was pitted against a Syrian-Iranian backed  Hezbullah-led coalition that included Armenians and a Christian splinter faction.

Late last month, US Vice President Joseph Biden went to Lebanon and openly threatened to cut off all US aid to that nation of 3.9 million if the democratically-elected Hezbullah coalition won.   Hillary Clinton made similar crude threats.  Is this the kinder, gentler, more thoughtful Obama way? Even Dick Cheney kept this threats private.

Imagine the uproar if the Saudi crown prince came  to the US just before elections and threatened to raise oil prices if Democrats  won.

The United States, Saudi Arabia and France spent hundreds of millions of dollars bribing Lebanon’s venal politicians and buying votes. The US has been mucking around like this in Lebanon since 1957, often with disastrous results.

Iran spread some money around as well. Nothing new about that: Lebanon’s elections often are determined by who bought the most voters and politicians.

All the western `baksheesh’ and some fancy vote rigging helped the US-backed March 14 coalition, headed by Saad Hariri, win 71 seats.  The Hezbullah-led coalition won only a surprisingly small 57 seats.  This left fragmented Lebanon just where it was before this sleazy  election.  The vote results reeked of fraud.  But Washington hailed Lebanon’s vote.

Is this what Obama means by promoting good government and democracy in the Muslim world?

Exhibit C:  Iran just had a hotly contested democratic election for president.  The incumbent, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was blasted on TV by his opponents and subject to barrages of public criticism.  There is not a single other Arab ally of the US, Lebanon excepted,  where  such feisty democratic behavior would be tolerated, and even less than would permit an honest vote.

Opponents in Iran are calling foul, claiming Ahmadinejad’s victory was rigged, but, so far, with little hard proof.  However imperfect, Iran’s elections tend to be much fairer than those of their Arab neighbors or Pakistan.

Many Muslims and non-Muslims alike see Obama as an honest, decent, well-intentioned leader. But they are wondering if he has so far failed to impose his will on the entrenched financial-military-industrial, complex of which President Dwight Eisenhower warned, that remains the real power in Washington.

There is so much positive work President Obama could achieve in the Muslim world – but, so far, he certainly is not doing it.  The song from Washington remains the same.

Mr. Margolis points to but a few examples of Mr. Obama’s double speak. I too had many hopes for this President that I feel was America’s last chance to redeem itself domestically as an economic power house much less dependant on a ravenous military.

Alas, I see my hope disappointed along with the hopes of many Americans, although I am Canadian.

The 2 party US oligarchy will inevitably lead to further US decline because of its reliance on the elite political benefactors. We are moving into an era of multi polar powers where US influence has and will be greatly diminished. My fear is that the Elite will try to ignite a major war as a result of the US decline, a last kick at the can if you will.

@ 'My fear is that the Elite will try to ignite a major war'

The question is whether Iran or Pakistan? The latter seems to be Washington's current choice.

A very well written article once again. However, I have to admire Eric for his conviction that Obama is for real. I am a Muslim and a Pakistani and being a representative of such notable segments of the global society I would like to say that apart from the western orientalized individuals who represent a minute percentage of the population, no one expected too much from Obama, rather we were gearing for the worsening of the global geo-political and economic situation courtesy the US of A, under the able leadership of the new president. I guess it is because we realize that democracy even American democracy is in effect a hypocrisy where in order to go along you have to get along, something that is still lost on most Americans and Westerners. Obama is as much a part of the establishment to which Bush and Cheney belong.

So expect the worst from Obama Bin Laden.

As country pop star, Shania Twain's song says, "You don't impressa me much..." so goes my feelings toward this president. The major issues which he has campaigned on are all but forgotten.
He has become a silver tongued snake oil salesman and the Muslim world is not buying it and will never buy it. You can't completely blame the president for if he had began to effect the policies he advocated during his election bid he would have been assuredly removed from office in the safe fashion as JFK.
There was one crucial course of action President Obama abandoned, a swift and decisive enactment of his election promises, this is the only was America could ever change. In sacrificing his convictions which he put to the America people in convincing fashion , I fear that he has just become "Just another politician" trying to do slight of hand and hoping his audience does not catch on. Till the Obama administration pulls out of Afghanistan or Iraq or even manages to effect some sort of compassionate health care system nothing that is said or done will interest me. Talk is cheap and to effect change contrary to what "Washington" believes, is not difficult. Obama campaigned on the slogan, "Yes, we can", ok...."Just do it"... "Less talk and more Rock!"

My hats off to Eric.Having read this piece more than once and then between the lines. There appears no tangible issue that was neglected or overlooked deliberately.More so is the fact that being not a part of the Muslim world, you have navigated so deftly and with courage of conviction in the veins of Muslim thought, philosophy and present day politics and statecraft.

Barack may have been born with a Muslim sounding name in the middle.Any person who believes in a single God and submits his will to this entity is a muslim. This is the exact translation of the oft repeated word. But the thoughts and aspiration of the Ummah as Mohammad envisaged is then another monumental and epic exercise in the welfare of the human race.Since the Western civilization grew around the Greek o Roman concept of Democracy and not meritocracy as Mohammad laid out the corner stone, much inter action and swapping of ideas bright and beautiful was never examined.Barack too, is missing out some.

As I picture the cosmic energy you have expended to gather this article, I pray God gives you the fortitude to carry on the good work.

Dear Mr. Eric,

Or should I call you Eric the tenacious well respected writer and political analyst:

I am outraged, perhaps more than one wishes to admit. Muslims and their Leaders have reached a sordid but realistic conclusion: Arabs are doomed to become second class citizens in this great world. Because on one hand Arabs have never been capable of self rule due to internal corruption and a fatal struggle for power. On the other hand, from Mr. Eric's thorough analysis, I just realized that this is the end of an era where Arab sovereignty is a thing of the past. Israel will never allow the Palestinian refugees to go back and live in a self governed independent state and share Jerusalem with the Jews, nor would Israel agree to a declared independent state for the Palestinians unless they conform to a strict rule where they remain submissive to the imperial Israel. Thus this Arab Israeli conflict will continue to spark unrest conflict and continuous eruption of small but deadly Wars for hundred years ahead. The USA along with Europe (The international community in general) have decided to push a well packaged deal a fast food peace treaty that will force Arab nations to swallow because well it is Doctor's orders (USA).

I also am perplexed what will happen now if Iran internal struggle for power contribute to its own demise not to mention a possible Persian /Israeli War backed up by US sanctions and full military support? How will the Arab leader react? Do Arabs care for just peace or a justified peace process that will fortify their submission to Israel and the UNited States under the pretext of Democratizing the Arab World.

I would be a mad man to believe that this peace in the Middle East will ever last long enough for people to forget why we the Arabs ever fought against the Jewish Israeli state to begin with.
Is this going to be the lessaiz-fair era, and will the Middle Easterners face more conflict more war more killings more suicide bombing more Jihad more street militia killings and more mysterious assassinations? If so, is this the end for a new beginning, where the American Empire will finally declare its legitimate right to reign supreme over the wild world through voluntary obedience?

Have Merci on your reader Mr. Eric. Give us hope a bright light, and a way out of this hideous war for survival.

From my post of November 9, 2008

I hope it's not the case, but I think Obama may not be the panacea hoped for.

Mr. Margolis wants Obama to deliver his speech in countries like UAE,Indonesia, and Qatar instead of Egypt. This view is wrong.Egypt is the largest Arab State and it houses Al-Azhar University which is considered one of the main Islamic teaching Institutions of the Sunni Muslim World. The UAE is not a "real" state.Only 19%(around 400,000) of its population are Emirati nationals.Qatar has 200,000 Qatari nationals out of a population of 1 million. The UAE is a large Oil company that is owned by a Confederation of Arab Tribes while Qatar is a gas Company that is owned by the Al-Thani clan. The Qatari Emir made a coup d'etat and removed HIS FATHER from power. While the late Shiekh Zayyid of the UAE also removed a family member,Shiekh Shakboot, from power through another coup. Both are not bastions of democracy and are not better than Egypt.Indonesia was headed by the late Suharto who murdered 500,000 Communist Indonesians in the 1960s.Indonesia sends students to study Islamic law to Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
