THE TAMIL TIGERS’ LAST BATTLE
Paris May 25, 2009
The Tamil Tigers fought to the last ditch- or, more precisely, a section of swampy beach along Sri Lanka’s Northeast coast. The bloody end of Sri Lanka’s 26-year old civil war is tragic and appalling. But it may also have been the only way to end that nation’s bitter civil war.
Large numbers of sick, starving, shell-shocked Tamil refugees are being herded into government security compounds. Some estimates put the number at 100,000. The number of civilian dead caused by the government’s final offensive against the last Tamil Tiger redoubt is unknown, but estimates run 6,000-10,000. The government in Colombo blocks all journalists and human rights group from the region.

It seems clear this struggle, which has cost 80,000-100,000 lives since the early 1980’s, is over – at least for now. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have been totally defeated.

Standard wisdom has it that conventional armies can’t win guerilla wars. But last week’s defeat of the Tamil Tigers shows there are important exceptions to this general rule.

Three other examples: Russia finally managed to crush the life out of the Chechen independence movement after eighteen years of the most cruel repression in which at least 100,000 Chechen civilians were killed by Russian forces and thousands tortured or `disappeared.’ Totally isolated and ignored by the world, Muslim Chechnya’s valiant battle for independence was finally snuffed out after  almost all of its mujahidin fighters were hunted down and killed, and its population terrorized into silence by a thuggish regime of Moscow’s Quislings.
The US shamefully joined Russia in branding the Chechen independence fighters, `terrorists.’

Angola’s anti-Communist UNITA movement fought for 27 years, as I saw myself while covering the bush wars in southern Africa. But after Washington decided that Angola’s Communist regime would be a reliable supplier of oil, it abandoned old ally UNITA. Savimbi was betrayed and assassinated in an ambush by foreign mercenaries (reportedly Israeli). UNITA, isolated in Angola’s remotest regions, collapsed.

The third example was Ukraine in the 1950’s. Its national liberation movement, isolated and unsupported, was ground down and finally exterminated by the Soviet KGB using the most brutal methods.

I’ve followed Sri Lanka’s bitter civil war between majority Sinhalese and minority Tamils since it began 26 years ago. As with those endless disputes  between Israelis and Arabs, Indians and Pakistanis, Turks and Armenians, I have great sympathy for both sides and watch these conflicts with deep sorrow.

Oppression of the island’s 3.8 million Hindu Tamils by extremists from the 17 million-strong Sinhalese Buddhist majority, and Tamil demands for a separate Tamil state, sparked civil war.  Britain planted the seeds of this conflict by favoring minority Tamils and putting many into plum positions, part of its standard divide and rule policy that has caused so many troubles to our day. Just look, for example, at Afghanistan, India, Pakistan or Sudan.

Sri Lanka’s Tamils are part of the ancient Dravidian race that once dominated India before being driven south by lighter-skinned Indo-European invaders. They   are part of a rich, 2,000 year-old  culture; Tamil is one of India’s classical languages.

Sixty six million Tamils live in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, and six million across southern India. Tamils are found from Southeast Asia to the Caribbean. Canada has one of the world’s largest expatriate Tamil communities.

A portly Tamil militant with no military experience, Vellupillai Prabhakaran, founded and led a guerilla force, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, in a struggle for an independent homeland in eastern Sri Lanka. He soon became a renowned military leader and a powerful cult leader.  Tamil moderates seeking peace were caught in a crossfire between government forces and the ferocious Tigers.   Prabhakaran ruthlessly wiped out all rivals and those Tamils seeking compromise.

The Tigers, drawn from poor peasants and tea pickers,  became one of the world’s most formidable fighting forces, repeatedly defeating the heavily-armed Sri Lankan Army.

The Tigers were originally armed and financed by India, which sought to turn Sri Lanka into a protectorate.   But Delhi finally turned against the Tigers and sent 80,000 troops to fight them. To everyone’s amazement, the Tigers whipped the mighty Indian Army and forced it to humiliatingly withdraw from Sri Lanka.

As a former soldier and war correspondent, I marveled at the courage, determination and tactical proficiency of the Tigers, who even had their own tiny navy.

Their reckless courage, use of suicide bombers, and attacks on civilian targets led them to be branded terrorists by many nations, including the US and Canada.  Tamil Tiger expatriates became notorious for extortion and heroin dealing to finance their war. In 1991, India’s late prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi, was blown to pieces by a female Tamil Tiger suicide bomber in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Tamils are not `terrorists,’ as Western governments and Colombo claimed. Nor are their opponents, the Sinhalese. The propaganda term `terrorist’ in no way describes this war.

Charges by Tamils that Sri Lanka’s government is practicing genocide are untrue, though its armed forces have caused high civilian casualties. This has been an ugly civil war with constant atrocities committed by both sides. Aside from small arms, the Tamil’s primary weapons were often bombs strapped on their bodies. This was a poor man’s struggle against massive fire power and modern weapons. Civilians were targeted by both sides, or ended up in the cross-fire.

As the old saying goes, `war is the rich man’s terrorism; terrorism is the poor man’s war.’

This week, the US and Britain piously criticized the Colombo government and demanded it cease military operations in civilian areas. The same US and Britain that just encouraged Pakistan’s brutal attack on the Swat Valley that has so far created  2.3 million refugees.

The Tigers were relentlessly hemmed in by superior forces. Government forces finally cornered the Tigers on the northeast coast and ground them down with heavy artillery, tanks and air strikes. The Tigers fought to the bitter end until leader Prabhakaran was killed.

The Tigers were finally defeated because they ran out of maneuver space.   Money, men and arms for the Tigers from the outside world had to run a Sri Lankan and Indian naval blockade. The world turned against Sri Lanka’s Tamils.

History teaches it’s imperative that Sri Lanka’s government in Colombo avoid triumphalism or revenge and be magnanimous in victory. Tamil should be afforded a high level of autonomy – as in India – and ample power sharing in Colombo. There should be no prosecutions of Tiger leaders.

The bitter civil wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua that I also covered were  eventually settled by wise and generous political concessions. Sri Lanka needs a similar process.

Unless Colombo is magnanimous in victory, it risks rekindling a low-level insurrection. India’s 70 million plus Tamils are angry at the defeat and suffering of their cousins in Sri Lanka. Many are calling for Indian military intervention.

If Sri Lanka’s Tamils are subjected to a Carthaginian Peace, there is a risk that India’s millions of sympathetic Tamils could become the source of new woes on the beautiful island of Sri Lanka.

Another excellent article Eric. I personally feel compelled to congratulate the Sri Lankans on finally rooting out the insurgency. However, I also believe, as per your analysis, that the government should be magnanimous in its victory. Ordinary people are in need of help and should be given a helping hand, however, as far as prosecution of the Tamil Tigers is concerned, I believe they should be prosecuted as per the judicial process. The small tear drop island has suffered greatly at the hands of the ferocious Tamil Tigers and they should pay for it. Sri Lankans are some of the nicest people there are and I have long hoped for their victory.

As for the the analysis regarding India, I believe it was a facade when the Indians seemed to turn against the Tamil Tigers, I would not be surprised if the blockade was used as a cover for maintaining a steady supply line to the LTTE, after all as Eric mentioned, since Sri Lanka cannot afford to make bitter enemies of the 70 million Indian Tamils, ask yourself, where exactly does this fact leave New Delhi? I am just glad that an indirect Indian misadventure in its neighboring country has come to an end and I hope that Sri Lanka can now rebuild. Best of luck to them.

Taliban militants are using same fighting technique against Pakistan as LTTE did against Sri Lankan Forces. Both were and are using human shields. One also should remember it was LTTE who invented suicide jackets and used female suicide bombers. It means the terrorists have been provided combat and explosives training in India and Afghanistan.
Hundred of thousands Tamils have been displaced and buried in the soil due to the longest war. Same was happened in Swat where more than 2.5 millions people were internally displaced and thousand were killed so far.

Why was my comment rejected because "recognised" and "unworldly" were flagged as censored words?
Will this be rejected too?

Why do I bother at all?

The Coming Israeli Air Force Bombing Attack On Iran
Back in June of last year, the Israeli Air Force did a dry run of 100 fighter jets up to Iran and back. This was the same time our gasoline prices here in the U.S. soared to $4.00 based mainly on speculation of an impending "disruption of oil supplies in the Mideast", as reported in our media. They would not have dared to openly blame the high prices my fellow Americans had to pay on Israel.

The Israeli leadership has said they would not allow Iran to go nuclear. They always mean what they say and followup with action. Israel wants to be the sole owner of "Weapons of Mass Destruction" in the Mideast. Nuclear is as big as it gets with WMD.
(It was reported at one time, I believe it was Jane's Intelligence, that Israel has more nuclear bombs than England. An Israeli minister even commented that their missiles could "hit any capital in Europe.")

In December of last year, our U.S. Congress quietly Ok'd around a 1,000 bunker bombs to be shipped to the Israeli military. This could be easily construed as implied consent. Our leaders have signed off on the invasion of Iran. A third Mideast war. Israel could not penetrate Iran's nuclear facilities and pull this off without these bunker bombs. We are the enablers.

In the last few months, our leaders have sent the newest Patriot missiles to Israel, as well as the most modern radar.

Just recently, the Israeli leadership has sent fighter jets, in a tanker refueling exercise, to the Gibraltar area and back, as reported in a French newspaper. In addition, Iran, for the first time in memory, according to Reuters Iran online, has sent 6 aircraft carriers out to sea all at once.

One has to wonder if the attack is imminent, in the next 30 days or so.....

I would speculate, maybe even presume to surmise, that this attack (after bombing Iraq and Syria's nuke sites) won't be anywhere near as consequence free as the other two. One thing is for sure - it is much more difficult.

( Eric - This Tamil Tiger article is another most excellent article by you. Bravo. My two favorite columnists - You in Canada and Uri Avnery in Israel. Your new site looks fantastico.

I happen to enjoy researching a topic. Hope this was interesting. It would be great if a professional journalist like yourself would cover this topic very soon and elaborate on it)

I like this piece, Eric. I didn´t know India sent 80,000 troops to get the Tigers.

Turning 65 last week, I never heard this old saying, but it is so true:

As the old saying goes, `war is the rich man’s terrorism; terrorism is the poor man’s war.’

Twenty four years ago, when the Americans and Soviets seemed to be heading to nuclear conflict for the 1st time since the Cuban Missile Crisis, the temper of those times moved me to do this:

The declaration

On Remembrance Day 1985, in the presence of the Governor-General of Canada, Government Leaders, the Military, Ambassadors of the Nations and 25,000 people he publicly declared,

"Hear O people and Nations, even to the ends of the Earth, the Word of the Lord God who is, and was, and is to come, The Almighty. The Lord has a controversy with the people. Do you do well to honour the dead, and yet, deny the God of the Living? Why do you follow the vain traditions of men, and make of no effect, the principles of God? You come here for one hour one day a year in a great show of public patriotism, and then forgetting, go back to work and make the same careless mistakes made by the generations prior to the 1st and 2nd World Wars. Hitler was killed, but it's his legacy that remains. A Soviet-American military-industrial complex consuming $trillions of dollars every year, holding the entire World hostage............"

"Hostage" was the last word he said perched on a bus shelter roof, as police got up and grabbed his megaphone. He was arrested for shouting, causing a disturbance, convicted and fined $250. He appealed without a lawyer to the Supreme Court of Canada. [16] [17] [18]

There is no confusion or grand illusions about my action that day. The facts are stated and it doesn´t have to be repeated. It´s a done deed.

There are no consequences for me if people don´t get it.. It´s all recorded in newspaper history and Supreme Court records.

A fair article. However there are few facts to be cleared out.
1)
Article Info:
"The Tigers, drawn from poor peasants and tea pickers, became one of the world’s most formidable fighting forces, repeatedly defeating the heavily-armed Sri Lankan Army."
Fact:
The tigers as well as any other militant groups were formed by "indigenous srilankan" tamil student movements against Srilanka's oppression on tamils. The tea picking tamils and poor peasants are "tamils of indian origin",brought by british during colonization, living in upcountry region of srilanka. Although a minor portion of them actually supported the tamil struggle, vast majority of them were living as either slaves, traitors or as mutes who could not do anything for their tamil cousins.
2)
Article info:
"Their reckless courage, use of suicide bombers, and attacks on civilian targets led them to be branded terrorists by many nations, including the US and Canada. Tamil Tiger expatriates became notorious for extortion and heroin dealing to finance their war. In 1991, India’s late prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi, was blown to pieces by a female Tamil Tiger suicide bomber in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu"
Fact:
There is something fishy about the ban on LTTE. USA banned them in 1997 as per request from India. However, in 2006 when Srilankan Government unilaterarily broke away from ceasefire and made offensive against LTTE, 18 countries banned LTTE as "terrorists". This clearly shows how the international community have set up a "proxy war" against tamils and defeat LTTE.Therefore it is not due to LTTE's use of Suicide bombing.

Rajiv Ghandi's assasination is an ongoing saga. The Jain Comission( the group investigated the assasination) have requested more time for the case as there are around 55 unanswered questions remaining in the case. The Supreme court of india have decisioned out that this is not an act of terrorism but an act of revange. Furthermore, there are suspicions of the involvement of America's C.I.A and the indian congress party itself along with LTTE. It was the media that glorified this event and put the entire blame on LTTE, since the attack is of "suicide bombing".

3)
Article info:
"Charges by Tamils that Sri Lanka’s government is practicing genocide are untrue, though its armed forces have caused high civilian casualties".
Fact:
What Adolf Hitler did to Jews was "Open Genocide". In srilanka it is "closed genocide". Within the last 48 hours of battle with LTTE, the Srilankan government have slaughtered around 40 000 tamils and destroyed the evidence. This is the reason why the UN or western media are not allowed into tamil areas.Srilankan government is accused by UN for murdering 20 000 tamil civilians. The real figures would soar up to 50 000 as 60 000 people were missing since end of year 2005. There are atleast 100 listed massacres of tamils starting from 1912, and more than 150 000 tamils were killed in 61 years of so called independance. Many more massacres by Srilankan forces at a minor scale were never recorded and will be discovered as mass graves are found. If this is not a systematic genocide, then what is?

Furthermore, as Eric Margolis mentioned in an article back in 2006,we should not forget that LTTE did run their own non-corrupt,highly effective government with exactly equal status for males and females. This might have been a "sin" according to those countries who claim to be democratic but have a totally messed up society. My question to the international community is, if LTTE are terrorists, then why did you sit down and talk with them? Why were there a ceasefire and both groups were in peace?later on,what is the point is helping a fundamentalist government to destroy a prosperous de-facto state and let the tamil civilians as beggers in their own land? Why could you not grant them what they asked for, an independant tamil eelam?

I see Eric has been deleting comments which don't agree with him faster than a Communist beaver. He is totally wrong on Pakistan, and vast majority of Pakistanis disagree with him on that issue.

But this article is very good. The Tamils were fighting for an independent homeland and I have some sympathy with that, but they also committed war crimes, as did the Sri Lankan government. The so called Taliban in Pakistan are nothing but criminals, who are not fighting for anything. They have not lifted a finger to fight against the occupation in Afghanistan but are brave when it comes to beheading captured and defenseless Pakistani policemen, and sending 14 or 15 year old boys to blow themselves up to kill fellow Muslims.

I'm glad Eric mentioned Chechnya, considering he has been writing pro-Russian articles for last several months. Russia is not some victim of American imperialism, but an immoral and imperialist power itself, which broke away sections of Georgia which wanted independence but denied the same to Chechens who are much more deserving of freedom.

I liked your article. I've been reading your articles for years now. I find your information to be very reliable. I have a question for you. Do you really think in your opinion that the Chechen rebellion has been totally crushed or that they have been weakened for the moment? I'd appreciate your answer on this question. Thanks

Thank God this protracted, gory and painful episode is over.Sadly it was human engineered to thwart and stunt a superlative nation from forging ahead of so many so called Asian Tigers. The consolation is, those who planned and executed this vile move also had to pay dearly and are resting eternally in the pits they dug for others.

The people of Sri Lanka be Sinhalese or Tamil should retrofit into a nation of Ravana and reenter the race for economic upliftment and glory of their nation.
